Today’s business news starts with the announcement of Google’s intention to purchase Motorola’s mobile unit. The article says a lot about patents and competitiveness but the broader story here is that Google isn’t buying a computer company. Google buys Motorola because they view mobile computing as the future.

Rather they are positioning themselves for where they see opportunity in the future. Last year with the introduction of GoogleTV (as an answer to AppleTV) and this year with the purchasing of Motorola Mobile and launch of Google+ they’re saying they believe the future will be socially connected and revolve around smart devices including phones, tablets and TVs.
